Guthrie letter, 16 Jan. 1854.

Summary: Two-page letter written by James Guthrie, as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, to R.P. Hammond, Collections, at San Francisco, California, dated January 16, 1854. The letter asks Hammond to "exert the utmost vigilance to detect ... attempts which may be made to fit out any vessel ... for the purpose of being engaged in any hostile enterprise against the citizens or possessions of any foreign country . . ." In the 1850s many plans were made in San Francisco to set up independent governments in Sonora and elsewhere. This letter documents the efforts to prevent such filibustering expeditions from leaving San Francisco.
